Qualifications

Mr. Marceau has been involved in one or more components of investigating, reconstructing, and testifying about accidents since the mid 1980s. He walked and drove a beat as a city police officer in Raleigh, the capitol city in North Carolina. Mr. Marceau learned firsthand what goes into investigating a crash as the responding officer at many accident scenes. As a police officer, Mr. Marceau also gained his first experiences testifying in criminal court.

After returning to college full time and leaving the police department, Mr. Marceau earned both his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and his master’s degree in civil engineering from North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

As an undergraduate student, Mr. Marceau gained experience working as a part-time land survey crew member and was soon an instrument man on the crew. This taught him the skills for making precise and accurate measurements.

He also began working in the consulting engineering profession learning how to serve clients on a variety of projects. Daren worked his way through graduate school as a research and teaching assistant. This gave him the opportunity to start teaching undergraduate students hands-on skills in engineering measurements and surveying among other subjects.

Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., became Mr. Marceau’s employer after graduate school. At this nationally recognized engineering consulting firm, he gained experience in preparing traffic signal, signing, and pavement marking design plans. After several years, Mr. Marceau became a licensed professional engineer, and rapidly grew the signal design practice in both the Raleigh and Charlotte, N.C., Kimley-Horn offices.

In parallel with his signal and intersection design practice, Mr. Marceau quickly developed a forensic engineering practice at Kimley-Horn. He served insurance, attorney, and public agency clients as they dealt with crash cases involving a variety of technical issues. As such, Mr. Marceau gained a reputation as a leader in the traffic engineering community, along with serving on several professional committees.

Mr. Marceau became a frequent lecturer to insurance, law enforcement, and engineering groups on traffic signal and intersection technical subjects, and on crash reconstruction topics. His clientele in the legal and insurance field grew, and after 12 years of managing dual design and forensics practices, Daren left Kimley-Horn to start a forensics-only practice — Forensic Traffic Specialists, PLLC.

Although he still occasionally consults on traffic signal design projects, Mr. Marceau is now primarily focused on forensics. His love has always been for seeking and understanding the facts in a case, and for then reporting his opinions in a clear manner — just like a teacher would.
